How Identity Security Can Reinforce Collaboration and Re-Establish Trust

After three long years, it was incredible to see so many identity security innovators and customers face-to-face at SailPoint Navigate in Austin, Texas. While our online attendees equally helped make the event an amazing experience, the excitement at being back in-person was palpable. At every turn, attendees were visibly excited to meet new people, swap stories and business cards, and strengthen old connections. This feeling of elation was especially present when keynote speakers took the stage. Guest keynote Daniel Pink — New York Times Bestselling author of The Power of Regret, When, To Sell is Human, Drive, and A Whole New Mind — was no exception.

Though he was the last speaker of the SailPoint customer conference, the audience was engaged from the moment Pink began to speak. He opened with a bombshell: “What’s going on in the world is not normal.” The remote professional landscape of the present, Pink explained, is tumultuous, isolated, and full of uncertainty. What’s next? How do we navigate (no pun intended), this strange new world?

Pink argues that to find balance, we must embrace this uncertainty. Rather than knowing exactly what to do, we should experiment and find what works — and what doesn’t — for ourselves. Because of this climate of unknowing, Pink also asserts that all of us should maintain a great deal of humility, and focus on issuing suggestions rather than commandments. Of these Pink offers a few.

First, that we recognize the value of autonomy. Good leaders should extend as much autonomy to their teams as possible. In fact, Pink argues, autonomy should be the default. When companies default to distrust, people tend to phone things in. But when leaders start off assuming that their employees care, and want to do a good job, it allows them to build from a foundation of trust and become engaged and motivated in their work, rather than bored or burnt out.

Pink also highlighted the importance of purpose, or the feeling of knowing that your work matters. But how do we define purpose? Pink stated that we often focus too much on the “how,” we do things rather than the “why” we do them. He presented a study that showed when cooks in a Boston restaurant could see the customers, customer satisfaction went up by 10% — because the cooks had a sense that that their work mattered. It gave them a sense of purpose. Pink challenged the audience to have two less conversations about how to do something, and two more about why.

The talk was the perfect sendoff to Navigate, leaving the audience abuzz with inspiration. But Pink’s stark callout of remote work culture also pushed to the forefront the sense of isolation so many attendees expressed, whether directly in conversations, or indirectly through their exuberance to be in-person again.

How Identity Management Impacts Team Culture

So what about company culture and the role identity management plays in it? In a fully remote or even hybrid landscape, it can be challenging to maintain a strong sense of community in the workplace. How do you define your company culture if you haven’t even met your co-workers face to face?

Ironically enough, governing access within a company using software like SailPoint IdentityIQ or SailPoint IdentityNow can actually facilitate even stronger communication between teams. Because a strong identity and access management foundation isn’t just about restriction, it’s about proper allocation of resources.

When the members of a team know that everyone has exactly what they need to deliver results, trust and workplace harmony naturally follow. This fortified sense of security within teams allows for more trust, more open communication, and ultimately, a more defined sense of company culture and identity.

But the best way to develop trust and a more defined sense of culture is through direct collaboration. And what better project to collaborate on than identity security?

Achieving Collaborative Synergy

With the training and ongoing support Regatta provides, teams can come together to achieve not only SailPoint self-sufficiency, but a state of collaborative flow.

With seamless SailPoint integration comes seamless collaboration, allowing teams to develop the collaborative synergy they need to be successful on all future projects, regardless of where they work.

The world may be shrouded in uncertainty, but as Pink said, uncertainty is best met with experimentation. So as we continue to innovate the field of identity security and adapt the way we work accordingly, we look forward to a new kind of future. One of autonomy and purpose for our workers, of more events and more togetherness, of hybrid and remote models that prioritize collaboration and community. Because zero trust in identity security doesn’t have to mean zero trust in one another.
